2GB limit?

AFAIK, there is no such limit for the size of disk partitions, so it may be
reasonable to use a database that works on raw devices.  

IIRC, Adabas D (cf. http://www.suse.de/de/produkte/software/dbms/index.html) 
is one such thing.
