In 2.2.14 you can hide this device using:
echo 1 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/conf/all/hidden
echo 1 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/conf/<device_name>/hidden
Read about it in Documentation/networking/ip-sysctl.txt
May be this functionality will be ported to 2.3 soon.
