Towards non-recursive makefiles

I've long believed that one big-ass Makefile was needed for the kernel
(remember, it can include sub-makefiles instead of doing a recursive
make)...  and in fact, automake's maintainer Tom Tromey has mentioned
that he wants to move automake in that direction too.
