my machine hungs during usual browsing combined with mozilla M12
compilation.
[2.]
today i was browsing the net with netscape 1.7, have some Eterms open and
few ssh sessions to server and i was compiling mozilla M12. in one moment,
CPU monitor starts reporting 100% CPU usage and almost everything has been
eaten up by system (if i interpret it correctly). by then, netscape did not
respond. after few seconds (when i was switching between desktops - i got
3x2 desktops) also other apps stops respondinig. so in shell i was unable to
run anything - kill, ps, ... . then even X stop responding and i was unable
even to switch to console.
after that i tried to reach my machine from another one over network. ping
tells me my machine is responding to packets but i was unable to login
(telnet nor ssh).
so i rebooted my machine (hard reset). after start-up i inspected
/var/log/messages and found some "kmem_alloc: Bad slab magic (corrupt)"
messages (listed bellow).
this behaviour looks slightly similar to oopses reported by Tymm Twillman
<tymm en coe.missouri.edu> (Subject: Oopses under 2.2.14...; Date: Wed, 19 Jan
2000 16:31:38 -0600) to me. but for me no oops. and it happend to me for
the firts time for me (while using 2.2.14 for about week; not counting
"Unable to handle kernel paging request" in "find_inode" reported few days
ago).
with 2.2.13 i got no problems (oops, freeze, ...). the only change from
2.2.13 is new kernel and new EIDE HD as replacement for burned SCSI HD
(also SCSI controler is now missing in my machine).
