NMI Watchdog detected LOCKUP on CPUn

For kernel 2.3.39 + 2.3.40 I get a message "NMI Watchdog detected LOCKUP
on CPUn" when booting. My hardware is a dual ASUS-board with 2 PII/400,
which is running nice on 2.2.14 kernel. What's going wrong?
