This is my benchmark:
LAPTOP: GATEWAY, sata hard drive with AHCI driver on kernel 2.6.23
lspci: [see below]
ram: 2GB
Filse Size: ~20GB
ntfs-3g version: 1.810
ddrescue /dev/sda2 /dev/null:~ 38MB/s
average write speed: 30MB/s

Same test with Journaled ext3
average write speed: 27MB/s

Same test with XFS
average write speed: 32MB/s

So, my apologizes a fuse driver can write faster as a kernel driver. But the 
very first versions of the driver was giving me the bad impression.
